Acquisitiveness is the strong wish to get things and to keep them. A person with a lot of it is always reaching for more — more money, more clothes, more — and does not like to let go. It is a rather formal, word. In everyday talk people more often say someone is greedy, or that they love buying things, or that they cannot stop collecting. You will meet it in psychology, in writing about money and shopping, and in news that wants to sound a little serious. It is not a kind word: it usually hints that the wanting has gone too far, that having matters more than needing. Though actually, it is a bit wider than greedy. Greedy often sounds rude and points at food or money. Acquisitiveness can also name a quieter habit: filling shelves, saving every box, wanting one more tool. Companies can show it too, when they buy other companies just to own more. It is about possessions, not about wanting to know, and not (in English) mainly about holding onto a boyfriend or girlfriend.
