The official process of checking that a school, hospital, company, or person meets certain standards, and then giving them a certificate or approval that proves it. A university needs accreditation so that its degrees are trusted and recognized. A or a lab might need accreditation too, to prove they are qualified and safe to trust. It's a formal, word — you won't hear it in casual conversation much, but you'll see it a lot on official documents and websites.
