To accessorize is to add the extra things that go with clothes or a room — a bag, a belt, a lamp, a cushion — so the whole look feels finished. It is a fashion and interior-design word, more American at first (it showed up in the US in 1939), and it still sounds a little magazine-like. You accessorize an outfit; you do not accessorize a maths test. Though actually, people stretch it in fun: a bike accessorized with lights, a phone accessorized with a charm. British spelling often uses -ise (accessorise); -ize is the US form and is also fine in many textbooks. The extras themselves are accessories.
