If something is accepted, most people treat it as right, normal, or allowed. An accepted idea is one the group has already said yes to, even if nobody voted. Accepted practice is “the way we do it here.” It can feel warm — you are accepted by friends — or merely official, as in an accepted method in science. Though actually, accepted does not always mean true. It means people have agreed to live with it. Fashion, manners, and even science have accepted views that later change. The same spelling is also the past of the verb accept (“She accepted the gift”), but this sense is the adjective: already agreed, already OK with the group.

組成accept + -ed. Accept came through Old French accepter from Latin acceptāre, built on ad- (“to”) + capere (“take”). The old picture is “taken toward you,” then “taken as OK.”
