Abstractedly is how you do something when your mind is elsewhere. You nod abstractedly. You stir the tea abstractedly. You smile abstractedly out of the window. The body is doing a small action; the mind is not with it. Same meaning as abstracted, but now it tells you about the manner of an action, not about the person as a whole. It is a ’s word, gentle and a little sad or comic — formal enough for books, rare in quick speech, where people say “she wasn’t really listening” instead. Though actually, it is not a way of saying “in an abstract, theoretical manner.” That is the tidy mistake. Abstractedly is about attention drifting, not about ideas becoming general.
