If a material is absorbent, liquid goes into it easily, like a sponge, a towel, or cotton wool. Water does not sit on top; the material takes it in. Paper towels are made to be absorbent; a plastic bag is not. You can also call the material itself an absorbent — “use an absorbent to soak that up” — though people more often keep it as an adjective: absorbent cloth, absorbent cotton. Though actually, absorbent is about taking in liquid (or sometimes gas). It is not the same as an absorbing story, which means an interesting one. That use does not describe towels.

組成From Latin absorbēns, the “absorbing” form of absorbeō (“to swallow up”). In English you can also see it as absorb + -ent, an ending that makes an adjective meaning “doing that.”
