    If you do something absently, your hands are busy but your mind is somewhere else. You nod absently while someone talks; you stir your coffee absently; you stare absently out of the window. You are physically there — though actually you are not really with what is happening. It is a close cousin of absent-minded. The word is gentle, not angry: it does not mean you are rude on purpose, only that your attention has wandered. Do not use it to mean “I was not in the building.” That is absent, not absently.
