If you do something absent-mindedly, you do it with your mind on something else. The hands or the mouth go through the action; the attention is not there. You might absent-mindedly stir tea long after the sugar has gone, or say “yes” without really hearing the question. It is the adverb that belongs to absent-minded: it tells you how the action happened. Same gentle tone — a bit funny, a bit tender, not a sharp insult. Though actually, in a car, a kitchen, or a lab, doing things this way can be dangerous. The word itself stays soft; the situation may not be.
