Dictionaries have long used Aborigine for a person whose people have lived in Australia from the earliest times, before later settlers came. That is the sense here. In real talk today, though, many Aboriginal Australians find the noun Aborigine old-fashioned or disrespectful, especially when a stranger uses it as a label. People who want to be careful usually say an Aboriginal person, an Aboriginal Australian, or — better still — the name of that person’s own nation. You may still see Aborigine in older books. It is often capitalised (Aborigine) because it names a people, not just a type. Similar-looking words have been used for first peoples elsewhere, but this entry is the Australian one.
