    Abbr. is a written short form of the word abbreviation. You do not really say it as a word. You see it in dictionaries, in the key at the front of a textbook, or in notes, where a writer wants to mark that something is a form. A line might read "USA (abbr. United States of America)". Though actually, a lot of books never write abbr. at all; they just give the short form and trust you. In American school English the full stop is common (abbr.); some British style leaves it off (abbr). If a teacher asks you to read the page aloud, say "abbreviation", not "a-b-b-r". Students sometimes lump abbr. together with e.g. and i.e.; those do different jobs. Abbr. only means "this is how we a word". It does not mean "for example", and it does not mean "that is".
