To abbreviate something is to make a word, a name, or a piece of language shorter. You may drop letters (Doctor becomes Dr) or keep only first letters (United Nations becomes UN). People also abbreviate a talk or a text when they cut it down, not only when they invent a short label. The verb wants an object: you abbreviate a word, a title, a speech. In the classroom, is the friendlier everyday verb; abbreviate sounds a little more like a dictionary or an office. Though actually, speakers are messy with the names of the results. They may call UN an abbreviation, an , or just "the short name", and they do not always keep those terms apart. The noun is abbreviation. The tiny written label you see in books is abbr.

組成From Latin ab- (off) + breviāre (to shorten), from brevis (short). English also took it as a verb with -ate. It is a doublet of abridge: same Latin idea of shortening, a different path into English. Some people treat it as a back-formation from abbreviation.
