An abbey is a large church plus the buildings beside it where monks or nuns live, or once lived. The head of that house is an or an . Some abbeys are still working religious houses; many in England are old stone churches that visitors walk through, even if nobody lives there now. It is more than a small chapel: church and home together, and usually a grand one. Though actually, people sometimes say abbey for any famous old church — that is a little stretched, but you will hear it. Westminster Abbey is the name most meet first.
