An abaya is a long, loose robe that covers the body, often black, worn by many Muslim women in some countries, especially around the Arabian Gulf. It is usually worn with a separate head covering; the abaya itself is the body robe, not the scarf. In some places it is everyday clothes; in others it is a choice. Though actually, you will now see colours and light cloth, not only plain black — the picture is tidier than the street. Not every Muslim woman wears one. English kept the Arabic word; we do not really have a home-grown name for this exact piece of clothing.

組成From Arabic عَبَايَة (ʕabāya). Compare aba, an older name for a similar cloak. First used in English in the 1800s. (The family name Abaya is a different word, from Tagalog.)
