ABA is the usual short name for the American Bar Association, the large professional group for lawyers in the United States. Bar in this older sense means the legal profession, not a place that sells drinks: people who have passed the bar are lawyers. The ABA model ethics rules, accredits many US law schools, and often speaks in public about courts and the law. You will meet the letters in news about American legal fights, in academic papers, and on the CVs of US-trained lawyers. It is an American institution; Taiwan has its own bar groups, so a student here mainly needs ABA as a label in US-related reading. People say the three letters, A-B-A, not a word that sounds like ah-bah.
