An A-lister is a very famous film star, musician, or similar — one person from the A-list, not the group itself. Papers and magazines like the word because it is short. It is informal: headlines and gossip, not a careful essay. Though actually, people stretch it. A chef, a designer, or a scientist can be called an A-lister in their own world, meaning they are the name everyone wants, even if people on the street would not know the face. The ending -er just turns the rank into a person, the way a footballer is someone who plays football.
