A 4x4 (you say “four by four”) is a car or truck that can drive with power going to all four wheels. In everyday talk it is the vehicle itself — the thing you see in the car park — not only the hidden system inside. People buy 4x4s for mountains, farms, wet roads, or just because they like a high, strong-looking car.
How the name grew is a bit mixed, and that is the truth. It can point to four-wheel drive, to having four wheels, and sometimes to an older kind of gearbox with four speeds. The little x stands in for “by,” like a multiply sign, so people say “four by four.” You will also hear 4WD; that is usually the system. 4x4 is more often the whole vehicle. In casual speech people mix the two.
Shops stretch the word. A tall family car may be sold as a 4x4 even when it is not a serious off-road machine.
