4WD is the written short form of four-wheel drive. It names a system in a car or truck: the engine can send power to all four wheels, not only to the front pair or the back pair.
Most family cars are two-wheel drive. That is fine on a dry city road. On mud, snow, wet grass, or a rough hill, two wheels can spin and go nowhere; four wheels sharing the work can keep you moving. On some cars you switch 4WD on when you need it. A close cousin, AWD (all-wheel drive), is on more of the time and often feels nearer to a normal car.
The letters show up on the back of vehicles, in ads, and in used-car notes. They are a bit technical — not , not slang. Shops like to stamp 4WD on any tall, tough-looking car. A high body is not the same as power going to all four wheels.
