In the UK, an 18 next to a film means the board has said it is only for people aged 18 and older. These films often have strong sex, violence, or very dark themes. You will hear an 18, an 18 certificate, rated 18. Cinemas are meant to check. Though actually, the old American letter for this kind of film was X; people still say X-rated in loose talk, especially about sex films, but the official US stamp you meet now is more often NC-17, and ordinary strong films there are R, which still lets under-18s in with a parent — so the systems do not line up one-to-one. There is also R18 in Britain, a narrower label for sex films shown in special cinemas. Everyday British English just says 18 for the usual adult cinema rating.
英國電影上的 18 是分級，表示只限 18 歲以上觀看，這類電影常有強烈的性愛、暴力或很黑暗的主題。大致像台灣的限制級。常見說法有「an 18 certificate」（18 級的分級）和「rated 18」（被分為 18 級）。電影院應該要查證年齡。
美國以前用 X 字母，口語中仍有人說「X-rated」，特別是形容性愛片，但現在官方常見的是 NC-17，一般較重的電影則是 R，所以兩邊不能一對一對照。英國另有一個更窄的 R18，只限特別的戲院播放性愛片。英式口語平常就說 18，指的是一般的成人級電影。
