Zzz is not really a word you say — it is written sleep. It stands for the sound of snoring, and it appears in comics and cartoons in the little cloud above a sleeping character's head, on (💤), in text messages, and in captions. Writers vary it freely: z, zz, zzz, zzzzz, Zzzzzzz. More z's means deeper or longer sleep, and there is no correct number. It does two jobs. The plain one is 'sleeping': you might text a friend at midnight, 'heading to bed, zzz'. The second, and now the more common one online, is 'this is boring' — putting zzz under someone's post means their post put you to sleep. That second use is rude, so read the room before using it. You will also meet 'catch some z's' (or 'get some z's'), a relaxed American way of saying 'get some sleep'. There the z's are counted, with an before the s. As a written sound, zzz has no grammar of its own — it usually stands alone, or sits at the end of a sentence like a small picture.

    呼呼大睡的狀聲字(漫畫裡表示睡覺的「Zzz」);網路上放在留言裡則常表示「無聊到想睡」

組成Not built from smaller pieces. It is a made-up spelling of a sound — someone tried to write snoring with letters, and z was the closest fit. Comics have used it since the early 1900s, and it stuck so well that it became the sleep emoji.
