Zydeco is a kind of dance music from southern Louisiana in the United States, made by Black Creole people there. It is fast, meant for dancing, and you can recognise it by two instruments: the accordion, which carries the tune, and the rubboard — a metal washboard worn on the chest and scraped with spoons or bottle openers — which carries the rhythm. The songs are often sung in Louisiana Creole French, or in a mix of French and English. It grew from the older French-language country music of the region and took in blues, rhythm and blues, and Caribbean rhythms, which is why it sounds more driving and bluesy than what people call Cajun music. Learners often treat zydeco and Cajun music as the same thing, and even in America people mix them up; the rough difference is that Cajun music comes from the white French-speaking community and leans on the fiddle, while zydeco comes from the Black Creole community and leans on the accordion and the rubboard. The word is uncountable — you play zydeco, you listen to zydeco, you go to a zydeco festival. It works as a modifier too: a zydeco band, a zydeco song. It is usually written with a small z.
