Zoroaster is the English name of the ancient Persian teacher who founded the religion we call . He is thought to have lived somewhere around 600 BC, but honestly nobody knows — scholars have argued for dates as early as 1500 BC, and the old dates you see printed (?628–?551 BC) carry those question marks for a good reason. He taught that there is one great good god, Ahura Mazda, and that the world is a battlefield between good and evil, light and darkness, truth and the lie — and that ordinary people, by choosing good thoughts, good words and good deeds, help good to win. It is a name, so it takes a capital letter and no 'the'. In English it appears in three places: history and religion books; the phrase 'the teachings of Zoroaster'; and, oddly, in art and music, because the German philosopher Nietzsche wrote a famous book called 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' and Richard Strauss wrote the music you know from films. Zarathustra is the same man — the Persian form of the name. English got Zoroaster the long way round, through Greek and Latin, so the two spellings live side by side, with Zarathustra sounding more literary or more respectful of the original.

It is a doublet of Zarathustra: two English spellings of one Persian name, one that travelled through Greek and Latin, one taken more directly. What the original name meant is genuinely disputed — the second part is usually read as 'camel', but I would not teach the whole meaning as settled.
