Zimbabwe is a country in the southern part of Africa. It has no coast — no sea touches it — and it sits between Zambia to the north, South Africa to the south, Mozambique to the east, and Botswana to the west. The capital city is Harare, and the people are called Zimbabweans. English is one of its official languages, along with Shona, Ndebele, and others. Its famous places include Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, and the stone ruins of Great Zimbabwe, an old African city built of fitted stone without any cement. The country was ruled by Britain from the late 1800s and was called Rhodesia, after the British businessman Cecil Rhodes. In 1965 the white minority government declared itself independent; Britain and most of the world refused to accept that. After a long war, the country became independent under Black majority rule in 1980 and took the name Zimbabwe. It grows tobacco and maize and mines gold, platinum, and other minerals. In the 2000s it went through a famous money crisis, when prices rose so fast that the government printed notes worth trillions of dollars — the reason many students first hear the name. As a word, remember it is a proper name: capital Z, no 'the' in front, and the same word does duty for the country and (as 'Zimbabwean') for its people.
