Zero-hours describes a kind of work contract, and it almost never appears alone — you will see it as zero-hours contract, and sometimes zero-hours worker or zero-hours job. Under such a contract the company promises you no fixed hours at all. They may call you in for thirty hours next week, or for none. You are paid only for the hours you actually work, so a quiet week means little or no money. In return you are expected to be free and ready when they do call. Employers like it because it lets them match staff to busy times exactly; workers are split — some like the freedom to say no, but most people who talk about it are complaining, because you cannot plan your life or borrow money when your income is unknown. The term is British, and it is a political word there: newspapers, unions and politicians argue about zero-hours contracts constantly, so the phrase usually arrives with a judgement attached. Taiwan does not use this exact contract type, but the nearest feeling is 時薪、隨時待命、沒有保障工時的打工. Note the spelling: , and hours with an s, because it is one compound sitting in front of a noun.
