Zermatt is a village in the Swiss Alps, in the south of Switzerland near the Italian border, and it is one of the most famous ski resorts in the world. It sits at the foot of the Matterhorn, that near-perfect pointed mountain you have seen on chocolate boxes and , and that mountain is the reason so many people go: to ski in winter, and to walk and climb in summer. Two things are worth knowing beyond 'a place where people ski'. First, no petrol cars are allowed in the village — people move around in small electric vehicles and horse carts, and you arrive by train — so the name carries a feeling of clean air and quiet. Second, it is expensive, and English speakers often use the name that way in conversation: saying 'they go to Zermatt every winter' says something about a family's money, not only about their holiday. In English the word almost always appears bare, as a place name: in Zermatt, to Zermatt, a week in Zermatt.
