Yule is an old word for Christmas. It is not the everyday word — nobody in Taiwan or London says "See you at Yule." You meet it in three places instead.
Yule is an old word for Christmas Yule是聖誕節的一個古老說法 It is not the everyday word它不是日常會用的字 nobody in Taiwan or London says "See you at Yule."不管台灣人還是倫敦人都不會說'See you at Yule.' You meet it in three places instead你反而會在三個地方遇到它
First, in old-fashioned or poetic writing, and in Christmas cards that want to sound warm and traditional. Second, inside fixed phrases: a Yule log is a log burned on the fire at Christmas, and also a chocolate cake shaped like that log.
First, in old-fashioned or poetic writing第一在老派或詩意的文章裡 and in Christmas cards that want to sound warm and traditional還有想營造溫暖傳統氣氛的聖誕卡上 Second, inside fixed phrases第二在一些固定片語裡 a Yule log is a log burned on the fire at Christmas a Yule log是聖誕節時在爐火裡燒的一根木頭 and also a chocolate cake shaped like that log也指做成那根木頭形狀的巧克力蛋糕
Third, and this is the interesting part, some people today use it on purpose because it is older than Christmas: the winter festival it named was a Germanic and Norse feast, held before Christianity came north. So people who follow pagan or nature-based traditions celebrate Yule in late December as the turning of the year, not as the birth of Jesus.
Third, and this is the interesting part第三這是最有趣的部分 some people today use it on purpose because it is older than Christmas現在有些人特意用這個字因為它比聖誕節還古老 the winter festival it named was a Germanic and Norse midwinter feast它原本指的是一個日耳曼和北歐的仲冬節慶 held before Christianity came north是在基督教傳到北方之前就有的 So people who follow pagan or nature-based traditions所以那些遵循異教或自然信仰傳統的人 celebrate Yule in late December as the turning of the year會在十二月底慶祝Yule把它當成一年的轉折點 not as the birth of Jesus而不是耶穌誕生
That gives the word a slight double life. In a card it feels and old — like saying "merry old Christmas." On a pagan calendar it means something quite specific and different. Both are real.
That gives the word a slight double life這讓這個字帶有一種微妙的雙重身分 In a card it feels cosy and old在卡片上它給人溫馨、懷舊的感覺 like saying "merry old Christmas."就像在說'merry old Christmas.'(古早味的聖誕快樂) On a pagan calendar it means something quite specific and different但在異教曆法裡它指的是相當具體又不同的東西 Both are real這兩種意思都是真實存在的
You will also see it as a shout of celebration in old songs and stories, the way people call out at a feast. In the related word is still the ordinary, living word for Christmas — jul in Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian. English kept it only as a leftover, a word that sounds like a warm fire and a very long time ago.
You will also see it as a shout of celebration in old songs and stories你也會在古老的歌曲和故事裡看到它被當成慶祝的呼喊聲 the way people call out at a feast就像人們在宴會上大聲呼喊那樣 In Scandinavia the related word is still the ordinary, living word for Christmas在斯堪地那維亞相關的字現在仍然是日常在用、指聖誕節的活字 jul in Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian也就是瑞典文、丹麥文、挪威文裡的jul English kept it only as a leftover英文只把它留下來當作一個殘留的痕跡 a word that sounds like a warm fire and a very long time ago一個聽起來像溫暖爐火、又像很久很久以前的字
組成From Middle English yol, youle, from Old English ġeōl ("Christmas, Yule"), either related to or taken from Old Norse jól. Both go back to Proto-Germanic *jehwlą, the name of the midwinter feast. Gothic has jiuleis. The word is older than the Christian holiday it now names.
