Yuck is the noise you make when something disgusts you. Not when it is dangerous or sad — when it is gross. Rotten food, a dirty sink, a smell in the drain, a fish eye on your plate. You see it, your face , and out comes yuck.
It is an , so it stands alone: "Yuck! What is that smell?" It can also be a noun for the nasty stuff itself — "there was some brown yuck at the bottom of the fridge" — though that use is looser and less common.
The register matters. Yuck is childish and very informal. Children say it constantly. Adults say it to friends and family, half joking, half meaning it. You would not write it in an essay, and you would not say it about the food your host just cooked for you unless you want a very quiet evening. In Taiwan a student's instinct is to reach for it whenever something is bad — but it is only for the disgusting kind of bad, the kind you feel in your stomach.
The word only appeared in English in the 1960s and it probably started as an of the sound of gagging, which is exactly what it feels like when you say it. is its opposite.
