A yodeller is a singer who yodels — who sings while jumping quickly back and forth between their ordinary voice and a much higher, thinner voice, so the sound breaks and leaps. That break is the whole point; it is not a mistake. The style comes from the mountains of Switzerland and Austria, where herders used these loud broken calls to send sound across valleys and to call cattle, and it later became singing. It also travelled: American country and cowboy singers of the 1930s yodelled, and so do some singers in other mountain regions. Today the word carries a picture with it — green mountains, cows with bells, a man in traditional dress — so in everyday English it is often used with a smile, in jokes and adverts. Note the spelling: British English writes yodeller with two l's, American English writes yodeler with one.
