    Yo is a short shout you use to say hello, to make someone look at you, or to answer when someone calls your name — like saying "here" when the teacher reads the list. It is very casual and very spoken. It sounds young, and it sounds American; it came into wide use through Black American English and hip-hop, and now young people all over the world say it, often half joking. Between friends it is warm and friendly: "Yo, wait for me." To a stranger, a boss, or a teacher, it can sound rude, so it stays inside friendships. People also use it in the middle of talking to grab attention or to mark that something surprising is coming: "Yo, that was crazy." You write it in messages all the time; you do not write it in school work or an email to a company. There is a second, separate use: in some casual American speech yo can stand in for your, as in "yo car" — that one is even more informal and is tied to particular ways of speaking, not something students should copy.

組成The shout itself is very old — sailors and hunters were calling out yo back in the 1400s, related to old words for "yes". Its modern life as a greeting starts around 1859 and became popular in the twentieth century, especially in Philadelphia, and later spread everywhere through hip-hop music. When yo means your, that is something different: it is simply your said without the r sound.
