組成Not built from smaller English pieces. It comes through Ottoman Turkish یمن (yemen) from Arabic اَلْيَمَن (al-yaman), which goes back to a Semitic root meaning 'right; right hand'. If you face the rising sun — east — then south is on your right, so the land to the south of Arabia was 'the land on the right'. (People also link it to a word for 'lucky', because the right side was the lucky side; the Romans called the region Arabia Felix, 'happy Arabia'.)
