Yeast is a living thing, so small you can't see just one, that bakers and brewers use. When you mix yeast with sugar and warm water, it feeds on the sugar and gives off tiny bubbles of gas — that's what makes bread dough rise and get soft holes inside after baking. The same living thing, in a different type, turns sugar into alcohol, which is how beer and wine are made. "Yeast" is also the name of a common health problem (a "yeast infection") when this living thing grows too much somewhere in the body.
