    "Yawning" is the -ing form of "yawn" - opening your mouth wide and breathing in deeply, usually when you're tired or bored, often without meaning to do it at all. It can spread easily too - seeing someone else yawn often makes you yawn too. "Yawning" is also used to describe something that looks like a huge, wide-open gap or space, like "a yawning gap" between rich and poor, or "a yawning canyon" - meaning something wide and almost in size.
