A yarmulke is the small round cap that Jewish men and boys wear on the crown of the head, often held on with a clip. Many Jewish men wear one at prayer or in the ; observant men wear one all day. It is a sign of respect — a covered head before God. The Hebrew word for the same thing is kippah, and both words are used in English. Roughly: yarmulke is the older, homelier word that came into American English through , so it is what many Jewish families in America say; kippah is the Hebrew word and is common in Israel and increasingly in careful or religious writing. Neither is wrong. The spelling gives students trouble because it does not look like how it sounds — English speakers say it about "YAH-muh-kuh", swallowing that first l, and you will also see it spelled yarmulka or yarmelke. It is an ordinary countable noun: a yarmulke, two yarmulkes.
