Yaoundé is the capital city of Cameroon, a country in central Africa. It sits inland, up in the hills, and it is where the government sits — but it is not the country's biggest or busiest city. That is Douala, the port on the coast. This split is worth knowing because English speakers often assume a capital is automatically the largest city, and for many countries that is simply not true. Cameroon was ruled partly by France, so French is one of its official languages, and the name keeps its French accent mark: Yaoundé, with é on the end. In English writing people usually keep the accent, though you will see "Yaounde" without it in newspapers and on websites that cannot easily type accents. English speakers say it roughly "yah-oon-DAY". Like most city names, it takes no "the" and is capitalised. You will meet it in news, geography, and anything about the African Union or international meetings.
