A "yam" is a large, starchy root vegetable, a bit like a big potato but usually sweeter and with rougher, darker skin. It's an important food in many parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, cooked by boiling, frying, or . In American English, people sometimes call orange sweet potatoes "yams" too, even though true yams and sweet potatoes are actually different plants - so the word can mean slightly different things depending on where you are.
