An old and highly respected university in New Haven, Connecticut, in the United States. It was founded in 1701, which makes it the third oldest university in the country, and it is one of the eight Ivy League schools — a small group of old north-eastern universities with famous names, very hard entrance, and a reputation that opens doors. Alongside Harvard it is the school Americans name when they want to say "the very top". Yale is known for law, drama, art and the humanities in particular; a striking number of American presidents and Supreme Court judges studied there. In speech people simply say "Yale" for the whole thing — "she got into Yale", "he teaches at Yale" — and you can also use it in front of another noun: a Yale student, a Yale degree, the Yale library. There is a second, quite separate Yale you may see: a Yale lock, the common cylinder lock with a small flat key, named after Yale who invented it. In Britain especially, people call that kind of key a Yale key. Same spelling, no connection to the university.
組成A family name, given to the school after Elihu Yale, an early donor who paid for much of its first building. The surname itself comes from a Welsh place name, Iâl, from a Welsh word meaning a clearing or farmed upland.
