A name for God, used above all in the Hebrew Bible — what Christians call the Old Testament. In Hebrew the name is written with four letters, roughly YHWH, and ancient Hebrew did not write , so nobody today knows for certain how it was said. "Yahweh" is scholars' best guess at the old pronunciation, and it is the form you find in books about history and religion.
A name for God這是神的一個名字,used above all in the Hebrew Bible最主要用在希伯來聖經裡——what Christians call the Old Testament也就是基督徒說的舊約。In Hebrew the name is written with four letters, roughly YHWH在希伯來文裡,這個名字是用四個字母寫的,大約是YHWH,and ancient Hebrew did not write vowels而古希伯來文不寫母音,so nobody today knows for certain how it was said所以今天沒有人能確定它當初是怎麼唸的。"Yahweh" is scholars' best guess at the old pronunciation「Yahweh」是學者對古代發音最好的猜測,and it is the form you find in books about history and religion也是你會在歷史和宗教書籍裡看到的寫法。
This matters in practice: many Jewish people do not say the name aloud at all, out of respect, and read "Adonai" (the Lord) instead when the four letters appear. Most English Bibles follow the same custom and print "the LORD" in small capital letters wherever the Hebrew has YHWH. So "Yahweh" is a word you will meet far more in a textbook, a lecture or an academic article than in a church service.
This matters in practice這在實務上很重要:many Jewish people do not say the name aloud at all, out of respect很多猶太人出於尊重根本不會把這個名字唸出來,and read "Adonai" (the Lord) instead when the four letters appear遇到這四個字母出現時,會改讀成「Adonai」(意思是主)。Most English Bibles follow the same custom大多數英文聖經也遵循同樣的習慣,and print "the LORD" in small capital letters wherever the Hebrew has YHWH只要希伯來文出現YHWH,就印成小型大寫字母的「the LORD」。So "Yahweh" is a word you will meet far more in a textbook, a lecture or an academic article所以「Yahweh」這個字,你會在教科書、演講或學術文章裡遇到得多得多,than in a church service遠比在教會禮拜裡常見。
You may also meet "Jehovah", an older English attempt at the same four letters that most scholars now think was a mistake — the of Adonai accidentally read onto the of YHWH. Jehovah's Witnesses, whose group name comes from that form, still use it.
You may also meet "Jehovah"你可能也會遇到「Jehovah耶和華」,an older English attempt at the same four letters這是英文早期對同樣那四個字母的一種嘗試寫法,that most scholars now think was a mistake現在大多數學者認為那是個誤讀——the vowels of Adonai accidentally read onto the consonants of YHWHAdonai的母音不小心被套到了YHWH的子音上。Jehovah's Witnesses, whose group name comes from that formJehovah's Witnesses耶和華見證人這個團體的名字就來自這個寫法,still use it他們現在還在用。
Yahweh, Jehovah and "the LORD" all point to the same name.
Yahweh, Jehovah and "the LORD"Yahweh、Jehovah和「the LORD」all point to the same name指的都是同一個名字。
組成From the four Hebrew letters יהוה (YHWH), often called the Tetragrammaton — Greek for "the four letters". The German spelling Jahweh appeared in the 1850s; the English Yahweh, spelt with Y so English readers say the first sound correctly, appears from the 1860s and entered English Bible translations around 1902.
