The name of a big American internet company, best known for its website — one of the first places people used to search the web, back in the 1990s, and still a place to read news, check email, look at share prices, sports results and the weather. In its early years it was the front door to the internet for millions of people; today Google does most of the searching, and Yahoo is more of a news and email site than a search engine.

The name of a big American internet company一家美國網路大公司的名稱,best known for its website最有名的是它的網站 — one of the first places people used to search the web曾是人們最早用來搜尋網路的地方之一,back in the 1990s在九零年代,and still a place to read news, check email, look at share prices, sports results and the weather現在仍是查新聞、收信、看股價、體育結果和天氣的地方。 In its early years在早期,it was the front door to the internet for millions of people它是好幾百萬人上網的大門;today Google does most of the searching現在大部分的搜尋都是 Google 在做,and Yahoo is more of a news and email site than a search engine而 Yahoo 比較像是新聞和信箱網站,不太像搜尋引擎了。

Two small things about the name. It is written with a capital Y and, properly, with an mark at the end — Yahoo! — though almost nobody types that mark in ordinary writing. And the same spelling without the capital is an ordinary English word, yahoo, meaning a rough, stupid, noisy person; it comes from a book, Gulliver's Travels, where the Yahoos are a savage human-like race.

Two small things about the name關於這個名字,有兩件小事。 It它 is written with a capital Y字首 Y 要大寫 and, properly, with an exclamation mark at the end而且正式來說結尾要加驚嘆號 — 'Yahoo!' — though almost nobody types that mark in ordinary writing不過平常寫的時候幾乎沒有人真的打那個驚嘆號。 And the same spelling without the capital而同樣的拼法但不大寫,is an ordinary English word是一個普通的英文字,'yahoo', meaning a rough, stupid, noisy personyahoo,意思是粗魯、愚蠢、吵鬧的人;it comes from a book, Gulliver's Travels它出自一本書《格列佛遊記》,where the Yahoos are a savage human-like race裡面的 Yahoos 是一種野蠻、像人的種族。

It is also a shout of joy — "Yahoo! We won!" The company's founders knew all this and picked the name partly as a joke; a story that the letters stand for a long phrase came afterwards.

It它 is also a shout of joy也是一種歡呼的叫聲 — "Yahoo! We won!"「Yahoo!我們贏了!」。 The company's founders這家公司的創辦人 knew all this and picked the name partly as a joke知道這些,取這個名字有一部分是在開玩笑;a story that the letters stand for a long phrase came afterwards後來才有一個說法,說這幾個字母代表一整句話的縮寫。

組成A brand name taken from an existing English word. In Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, the Yahoos are dirty, brutish creatures shaped like people — the word has meant "a crude, loud person" ever since. The exclamation mark was added to make the trademark stronger. The claim that it stands for "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle" is probably a joke invented to fit the name afterwards.
