Xbox is a game machine (a "games console") made by Microsoft. You connect it to a television, put in a game, and play with a controller in your hands. It first came out in 2001, and since then there have been many versions — Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S — so when someone says "I got a new Xbox", they mean whichever version is current, not the first one. Xbox is a brand name, so it takes a capital X. It is also the name of the whole world around the machine: Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass are the online service and the game subscription, and people say "my Xbox account" or "add me on Xbox" when no machine is in the room at all. In everyday talk it is very casual, the way a student says PS5 or Switch. You may sometimes see it used as a verb online ("we Xboxed all night"), but this is rare and playful — do not write it in an essay. The important thing for students: Xbox is one particular company's machine, not the general word for "games console". PlayStation and Nintendo Switch are not Xboxes.
組成From "DirectX box" — DirectX is Microsoft's software that lets games draw pictures and make sound on a computer, and "box" is the casual word for a computer machine. The name was first a nickname inside the company for the prototype, and it stuck.
