A computer word, said "WIZ-ee-wig," meaning that what you see on the screen is exactly what you will get on paper — or in the finished thing. It is made from the first letters of "What You See Is What You Get." To feel why it matters, picture the old way: you typed your words together with codes telling the machine to make this bit big, that bit bold, and you only found out what it really looked like after you printed it. A WYSIWYG program shows you the page as it will be, right there while you type — which is how nearly every word processor works now, so the idea has become invisible. You meet the word most often in front of another noun: a WYSIWYG editor, a WYSIWYG interface. It is normal, everyday office and computer talk, not formal writing. People also use it a little loosely for websites and design tools, where nothing is printed at all — there "what you get" just means the finished page. And a small warning built into the word: people in the trade joke about WYSIAWYG (what you see is *almost* what you get), because screens and printers never match perfectly.
