A Wykehamist is someone who studies, or once studied, at Winchester College, one of the oldest and most famous private boarding schools in England. It is also used as an adjective, as in 'Wykehamist manners'. You will almost only meet the word in British writing about politics, the law, or the old upper class — a newspaper profile of a judge or a cabinet minister might slip it in to tell you quietly where that person came from, and how expensive their education was. Almost no one outside Britain knows it, and plenty of British people do not either. Each of these very old schools has its own such word, and knowing them is itself a small class signal: Eton has Etonian, Harrow has Harrovian, Winchester has Wykehamist. Note the shape of that last one — it does not come from the name of the school at all, but from the name of the man who founded it in 1382, William of Wykeham. So you cannot work it out from 'Winchester', which is why it looks so strange the first time you see it. It always takes a capital W.
