WWF stands for the World Wide Fund for Nature — the big international conservation organisation with the black-and-white panda as its logo. It works to protect wild animals and wild places: tigers, whales, rainforests, coral. You will meet the letters in the news, on posters, and on charity donation pages, and most people say them one by one, 'double-you double-you eff', rather than as a word. Two things are worth knowing. First, the group used to be called the World Wildlife Fund, changed its name in 1986, and in the United States and Canada it is still officially called that — so both long names are correct, depending on the country, while the letters WWF stay the same. Second, the same three letters were used for years by the World Wrestling Federation, the American entertainment wrestling company. They lost a court case to the nature group in 2002 and became WWE, but older films, T-shirts and web pages still say WWF meaning wrestling. So if you meet these letters in something from the 1990s, look at what is around them before you decide which one it is.
