1. 1

Wushu is the Chinese martial arts — fighting with your hands, feet, and often weapons like swords, spears and staffs. In English the word covers two things that overlap but are not the same, and this is where students get confused. First, it is a general word for Chinese martial arts as a whole, the way Chinese people use 武術. Second, and more common in English sports writing, it is the modern competition sport built out of those arts — the one at the Asian Games, where athletes perform a set of movements (a form) and judges give scores, or fight in a ring under rules. That second one is much more like gymnastics than like fighting. The athlete is not hitting anyone; they are showing speed, height, balance and beautiful shape, and losing points for a shaky landing. Most English speakers do not know this word well. Many will only know 'kung fu', from films, and will say 'kung fu' for everything. If you say 'I did wushu for six years', quite a lot of people will need you to explain, and 'it's a Chinese martial art' is enough. It is a normal, neutral word, not slang and not especially formal, and it stays the same in the plural — you do not say 'wushus'.

    武術(在英文語境中多半指現代競技武術,即亞運那種有裁判評分的套路與散打;台灣日常講「國術」也很常見)

組成Taken straight from Mandarin 武術 — 武 (wǔ) 'military, martial' plus 術 (shù) 'technique, art, skill'. So literally 'martial techniques'. English borrowed the sound and the meaning together, without translating it.
