A wren is a tiny brown bird with a short, sharp tail that it often holds straight up in the air. It is one of the smallest birds in Europe, small enough to sit in your hand, and it lives in gardens, hedges and woods. For its size it is loud — birdwatchers always mention this — so people often hear a wren long before they see one. It is a countable noun: one wren, two wrens. In Britain the wren is a very familiar, much-loved little bird, and it used to be on the back of the old British one-penny coin, so it carries a warm, feeling for British people that the plain word "bird" does not. It appears in old rhymes and folk customs too. Careful, though: the birds Americans call wrens are related but not the same species, and in Taiwan the birds you might see called 鷦鷯 are the same family. Wren is also a common English family name — the architect Christopher Wren, who built St Paul's Cathedral in London, is the famous one — and in Britain "a Wren" (capital W) used to mean a woman serving in the , the navy's women's branch.
