'Wouldn't' is the short form of 'would not', and it covers a surprising amount of ground. It carries the negative half of an if-sentence: "I wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it." It a refusal or an opinion to be polite: "I wouldn't recommend the fish." "I wouldn't if I were you." It reports a past refusal — this is the one students underuse: "The car wouldn't start." "He wouldn't tell me where he'd been." Notice that this last use is not about the future or the imaginary at all; it is a plain past fact, and it works for machines as well as people. English quietly treats a car that won't start as something refusing, and 'wouldn't' is how we say it. It also describes what someone refused to do in the past: "She wouldn't eat vegetables as a child." In speech we almost always contract it; the full 'would not' is what you say when you are being emphatic or formal — "I would not do that." In pronunciation, remember the 'l' is silent: WOOD-nt. The is not decoration; 'wouldnt' is a spelling error. In formal essays, write 'would not' in full; in speech, messages, and dialogue, 'wouldn't' is normal and correct. It is also the backbone of many polite fixed phrases: 'I wouldn't mind…', 'wouldn't you agree?', 'I wouldn't know', 'it wouldn't hurt to ask'.
