Workaday means ordinary, plain, and not exciting — the way things are on a normal working day. You use it for the parts of life that just repeat: the workaday routine, workaday clothes, a workaday little town, the workaday business of paying bills. The word carries a quiet feeling of "this is fine, but nobody would write a song about it." It is often set against something brighter, and that contrast is where it lives most naturally: people talk about escaping the workaday world into a film, a holiday, a dream. Because of that, you will meet it more in writing — novels, essays, newspapers — than in speech. If a friend asks about your weekend, you would not say "it was workaday"; you would say "nothing special." It is a soft word, not a cruel one. Calling a meal workaday says it fed you and did nothing more; it does not say it was bad. Applied to a person's work it can sting a little, though — a workaday writer is a competent one, not a good one. There is also an old noun use meaning a working day itself (as opposed to a holiday), but you will almost only see that in old books.
