A wordsearch is a puzzle: you get a big square (or rectangle) full of letters that look random, plus a list of words underneath. Your job is to find each word hidden in the grid and circle it. The words can run left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top, and diagonally in any direction — that is what makes it harder than it first looks. It is a gentle, low-stress puzzle. You do not need to know anything; you just need sharp eyes and patience. That is why they fill children's activity books, in-flight magazines, hospital waiting rooms, and — very often — English classrooms, since a wordsearch makes students look at the spelling of a word letter by letter. Spelling of the word itself is loose: you will see 'wordsearch', 'word search', and 'word-search', all common and all accepted. British writing tends towards the one-word form, American towards two words. It is a countable noun: a wordsearch, three wordsearches. You 'do' a wordsearch (not 'play' one, and not 'make' one unless you really mean creating it). Compare it with a crossword: a crossword gives you clues and you must work out the word; a wordsearch gives you the word and you must find it. So a wordsearch tests looking, a crossword tests knowing.
