A very offensive insult for an Italian person, or for someone of Italian family. Do not use this word — there is no safe or joking way to say it. It is listed here so you can recognise it when you meet it, because it does turn up in old films, in novels about New York, and in songs, and a who does not know what it is may repeat it without understanding. Understand how heavy it is: this is not a rude word like "stupid" that makes someone angry for a minute. It is a slur — a word invented to make a whole group of people less than human — and it belongs with the worst words in English. Saying it to an Italian-American, or even near one, can end a friendship or lose you a job, and no apology afterwards fully undoes it. If you must talk about the word itself, English speakers say "the w-word" or "an anti-Italian slur". If you meet it in an old book, that is the writer showing you the ugliness of a time; it is not permission. The one thing you may safely do with this word is know it and never say it.
組成From Neapolitan guappo ("dude, stud"), a form of greeting, itself borrowed from Spanish guapo ("bold, handsome"). First seen in New York City around 1906, then spreading to Canada, Australia and Britain. Note that the popular story — that it stands for "without papers" or "working off passage" — is false; people invented that explanation later to fit the word.
