Woodstock is the name of a music festival held over three days in August 1969, on a farm in New York State in America. About 500,000 young people came — far more than anyone planned for — so the roads stopped working, the food ran out, and it rained until the field turned to mud, but the music went on: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane and many more. It has become the symbol of the hippie years: young people, peace, long hair, no war, everyone sharing. That is why, in English, you can use the name as a picture: 'it was like Woodstock' means a huge, crowded, muddy, happy, disorganised gathering. Careful with the geography — the festival was not actually held in the town of Woodstock; the town gave its name to the event and the site was about 70 km away near Bethel. Later festivals used the name too (1994, 1999), and the 1999 one ended badly, so an older person may hear something different in the word than a younger one does.
