Someone whose job is cutting down trees, or cutting up wood for burning. The word feels old — it belongs to fairy tales and village life, and the picture it brings up is a man with an axe and a hut at the edge of the forest. In Hansel and Gretel, the children's father is a poor woodcutter. Today the actual job is done with machines by a logger or a lumberjack (American), or a forestry worker, and hardly anyone is called a woodcutter now. So use it for stories, history and folk tales; for a modern job, use logger.
