A groundhog — a fat, brown, furry North American animal about the size of a large cat, with short legs. It digs long tunnels, eats plants, and sleeps all winter. 'Woodchuck' and 'groundhog' are two names for exactly the same animal; Americans use both, and which one you hear depends on the region and the person. Gardeners and farmers know it as the animal that eats their vegetables. Most learners meet the word not from biology but from the famous English tongue twister: 'How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?' — which is a joke, since the animal has nothing to do with wood at all.
